Yesterday was a first attempt by us to produce a benefit in honor of Donald Colley, my father. On behalf of myself, Eric, and my dad, I want to extend a very sincere, and heartfelt ‘Thank You’ The benefit, that we named Heartstock, was a very big success. We raised more money than what we expected too! We are well on our way to having his name added to the list to become a recipient of a heart transplant.
It was a very long day with much to do. And, to be honest, the last month had Eric and myself concerned about our abilities to pull it off on the scale in which we were planning. But, as we talked to friends and family about our ideas, and what we needed to do to accomplish it, we found out very quickly that we didn’t have to do this on our own. With wonderful ideas, generous donations, and numerous volunteers, the event was a huge success, and we even fun too.
We have always known how ‘blessed’ we have been with a truly wonderful family, and long time friends that have always been there for us. But in planning this event, we have been overwhelmed by the generosity and support from everyone, friends, family, businesses and acquaintances alike. To quote a wise man, “A family is a place where minds come in contact with one another” And we are very happy to have realized that we had a lot of ‘Family’ with us yesterday.
My father was overwhelmed with the turn out, and sincerity from everyone. Many walked up to meet him and give him their regards during this time and extend their sincerest well wishes for him and the future. It’s emotional to have many people you’ve never met before come up, grab you by the hand, and look you in the eyes and say so many kind words. Many hugs were given to him yesterday, and he left the event with many emotions and feelings, but most of all he was overwhelmed with Gratitude.
The value of a man resides in what he gives and not in what he is capable of receiving. We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.
He was born the youngest of 11 children on a farm in a small town in southern Ohio. As an adult, he loved working as a truck driver until his battle with heart disease rendered him unable to enjoy his weeks on the road seeing the countryside he loved so much. He is a big gentle soul, with a silly sense of humor. He cherishes his family and the time he spends with us.
Donald has had four major heart attacks, the first of which when he was on the top of his semi-rig trailer, applying its tarp in Virginia as it started to rain. His last heart attack was Sept 2010, and resulted in a quadruple bypass. The doctors were planning on a 5th bypass, but his heart was too frail to continue. Donald remained in a medically induced coma for 13 days while his fragile heart tried to heal. After almost a year of recovering, he set a goal to walk in a National Heart Association marathon. Then, his health declined quickly. He went from being able to walk up to 3 miles a day, to being admitted into the hospital 9 times with congestive heart failure. After many changes with medications and frequent hospitalizations, the doctors informed us that he needed to have a Heart Transplant to continue living.
Donald is currently waiting on a heart transplant at Tampa General Hospital. His heart does not function at a rate to sustain life. He now has to use oxygen on a regular basis, has an implanted Pic line with life sustaining medications being continuously infused and is confined to using a motorized chair, or a walker for stability for short distances. Without a heart transplant, it is very likely that he will not be celebrating another birthday.
Even with health insurance, Donald’s doctors have estimated his post-transplant annual medical care to exceed $12,000. In addition, the anti-rejection medications that he will have to take for the rest of his life will average $1,800 per month. Fundraising is essential to the success of his outcome.
sToneFish is a band combining acoustic and electric instruments that make up a Rockin Folk Americana sound.
A band of many, 7 to be exact. Most of them have known each other for years, and finally came together as fate would have it about 3 years ago. Their main goal was just to jam and have a good time, then realized that they wanted to share what they create with others. Music is in their hearts and souls, and it shows when they perform in front of friends, family, fans and music lovers. It's agreed that good music is the most important ingredient. They each bring something different to the band, and together create an original sound. sToneFIsh is a big band that creates a big sound and a great time.
The band has a large selection of songs, whether it be originals or covers from the likes of The Allman Brothers, The Band, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead and Emmy Lou Harris (just to name a few). sToneFish has a presence on stage that brings the sincere joy they have performing out into the audience. With mandolin, electric and acoustic guitars, bass, and two percusionists, whether it's an upbeat bluegrass tune or a rockin' jam sToneFish fills the air with the music every music fan loves.
They have been performing in clubs, pubs and venues all over the United States for years. They have shared the stage with members of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Roger Waters' Band, Graham Forbes of the Incredible String Band, Pat Travers, Damon Fowler, Dickey Betts, the Amazing Bolts, Shea Seger, Twinkle, Devon Allman, Eddie Money, Molly Hatchet, Elvin Bishop, Tommy Castro, Trombone Shorty, the Marshall Tucker Band, Jimmy Buffett (at the famous Blue Heaven in Key West), among others.
Their music is more of a rootsy "blues rock with soul," working to cross together soulful blues with the energy of rock n roll. If you like the sound of the Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Robert Cray, BB King, the Neville Brothers, Buddy Guy, Johnny Cash, Dave Matthews Band, Al Green, Stevie Wonder, the Allman Brothers, the Grateful Dead, Eric Clapton...you will love Kettle of Fish.
With an unusual arrangement of voices and instruments, Passerine offers a fresh take on traditional folk and bluegrass music as well as a repertoire of original songs that range from sweet ballads to the edgier side of contemporary Americana.
Carmela Pedicini and Tanya Radtke are both established singer/songwriters who have each been leading successful bands in recent years, both developing a substantial following. Together, their harmonies have been described as “magical.” As Passerine, they have added David Brain's dobro, for accents that can go from sweet and melodic to a bluesy moan, from the old time mountain sound to more contemporary urban folk and rock. Sara Stovall was recruited initially for her fiddle, but lately she has become a third vocalist. David Baker has recently been recruited to hold up the bottom end on bass, and has rapidly become an active contributor to the creative energy of the group. As the group explores new arrangements, they have joined their talents in search of an acoustic sound that is simple and compelling, that has both purity and depth, and that adds new musical layers to the tradition of the singer/songwriter.
Joel’s distinctive strong, clear vocals, melodic guitar and accessible, compelling songwriting make him a local favorite with a quickly growing reputation as one of the top draws in the Tampa Bay area. His fun, energetic live shows include originals and covers, with his own interpretation of some of the best known songs of the 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s. His wide ranging repertoire encompasses a variety of musical styles and his diverse list of musical influences come together to make a live show that’s not to be missed - both solo acoustic and with the Joel Fisher Band.
None of this could be possible without the kind contributions from the following. This list is in no particular order. Every single one of these people/businesses have stepped up in a BIG way and their generocity doesn't go unnoticed.
If for any reason you were a part of the event and don't see your name here please don't feel like you weren't apprciated. We have tried to keep the list up to the best of our ability but so many were so helpful and generous that it was diffucult. We really appriciate all that every single person or business did to make this happen.
